On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association honored the Culture Division of the Town of Windsor’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department with their Columbine Award for Excellence in Programming. Up to three awards of its kind are presented at the CPRA’s annual industry conference.

To qualify for the award, Windsor’s Culture Division had to describe a unique program created in the last three years that addresses and meets the needs of a community challenge. Creativity and innovation must be measured as a basis for the program’s success and show benefits to the community.

Staff from the town’s Cultural Division submitted their bi-weekly art therapy program at the Columbine Commons Assisted Living and Columbine Health and Rehab Facilities for the award nomination. The art program began in June 2017 and boasts popularity among residents.

According to the application, “One resident was able to paint for the first time in years. With the help of occupational therapy tools, she was able to hold a paint brush in her arthritic hands. Another resident who suffers from worsening dementia that causes a great deal of irritability and frustration was able to calmly create with clay for long enough to get some peace. Still another woman was able to overcome hand coordination disabilities in order to string prayer beads onto a bracelet. These small instances create a huge impact on the lives of these residents and their families, who often attend the program as a way of spending quality time with their loved ones.”

CPRA is a dynamic, proactive organization that creates healthy residents and livable communities by promoting excellence in parks and recreation. Their mission is to promote the parks and recreation profession and its growth throughout the State of Colorado.
