[ARCHIVED] Fall Yard Maintenance Reminder

The Town of Windsor will conduct its annual fall street sweeping efforts October through December.

Leaves that fall naturally onto the street are the responsibility of the town and will be picked up during regular street sweeping operations. Leaves that fall onto residents’ properties are the responsibility of the property owner.

Residents are reminded not to blow or rake leaves, twigs, branches, grass clippings, trash or debris into the street, as doing so can result in clogged storm drains, ice buildups and a $70 fine.

“Our street sweepers maintain approximately 5,000 miles of streets and highways within town limits each year,” said Streets Supervisor Brian Rowe. “We’re asking the community to help keep leaves picked up, so they don’t end up in storm drains and culverts, potentially causing ice buildups or clogged drains, which can result in flooding of streets, intersections and homes.

“Street sweepers do a good job of picking up leaves that fall naturally onto the street,” Rowe said. “However, street sweepers cannot pick up piles of leaves and large debris; it clogs the machines and usually results in expensive repairs.”

Windsor residents can help maximize the street sweepers’ efforts by keeping trash/recycling cans, sports equipment, basketball hoops, hockey nets, and other obstructions out of the street. If you see a street sweeper in the area, please move your vehicle off the street. Additionally, keeping tree branches and brush lining the street trimmed allows the sweeper to access the full curb and gutter area.

Residents can dispose of leaves, twigs, branches and grass clippings at the town’s Brush Recycling Site at 801 Diamond Valley Drive. The Brush Recycling Site is open from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, March through October. November through February, the site is open noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Fees are $2 per load for residents and $6 per cubic yard for non-residents and commercial entities.

For questions and more information, call 970-674-2485 or visit the Brush Recycling Site webpage.
