The Town of Windsor and the American Legion will hold the town’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, at Lakeview Cemetery.
The Memorial Day ceremony honors veterans laid to rest in Windsor, and will include comments and the placement of the memorial wreath by the American Legion; remarks from Mayor Kristie Melendez; and guest speakers Colorado State Representative Perry Buck and Maria Secrest, representative from the office of U.S. Senator Cory Gardner.
The American Legion Post 109, located at 624 Ash Street in Windsor, will offer free breakfast to all veterans and $5 per plate for non-veterans from 7 to 9 a.m. prior to the ceremony.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony and encouraged to place decorations at burial sites within the parameters set forth by Lakeview Cemetery to allow for proper maintenance:
- The placement of any perennial, shrub, evergreen, trees or rose bush is prohibited. The town reserves the right to remove any overgrown or unapproved plantings.
- Sprays and wreaths made from fresh-cut flowers will be allowed, but will be removed within two weeks or, in the cemetery technician’s opinion, when they become unsightly or detrimental.
- Artificial sprays and wreaths will be allowed from May 1 through June 20, as well as December 1 through March 1. The cemetery technician shall remove all artificial sprays and wreaths when they become unsightly.
- The town is not liable for lots, misplaced or broken flower vases, or for damage done by the elements, thieves, vandals or by causes beyond its control. The town reserves the right to regulate the method of decorating lots and has the right to remove any decoration so that a uniform beauty may be maintained.
Local Boy Scout troops will place flags and crosses on veteran graves Friday, May 26. If a veteran gravesite is missing a flag, contact the American Legion at 970-518-9617.
Gravesite decoration regulations are posted at the cemetery and on the Lakeview Cemetery page. For more information on Lakeview Cemetery, contact the Town of Windsor at 970-674-2400.
